What Is Peri Menopause?

Published by Jennifer at 5:18 am under Menopause

Peri menopause is a time of change that every woman will encounter at some point in her life.  During this time, your body begins to change from being fertile, or having the ability to bear children, to becoming unable to do so.  For some, menopause is something that they don’t look forward to and even dread.  For others, it is a time for a new you and a more dedicated and positive lifestyle.  No matter what you will experience, it is important to understand the peri or pre menopausal symptoms and condition that you’ll face.

Peri means prior and in menopause that means the first two to eight years prior to having your last menstruation cycle.  It also includes one year after that time in which time your body is working through menopause.  You are not considered to be in menopause until you have not had a period for 12 consecutive months.  During this type, your body is aging and changing in a number of ways.

One of the most significant changes in the body during the peri stage is that of adjusting hormone levels.  Estrogen and progesterone are the two hormones that are produced to aid your body in pregnancy and they are no longer needed, so they begin to stop being produced.  The problem with this is that many of those hormones are needed to regulate other things in your body, which is why you end up with symptom during the peri phase of menopause such as mood swings and hot flashes.  These are common and they are something that will come to an end, eventually.

If you have begun to have irregular periods or are starting to see signs of menopause, talk to your doctor to determine if you could be in the peri stage of menopause.  If you are, treatment, education and patience will help you to make it through the next years of your life.
