What Is Heart Valve Disease?

Published by Jennifer at 3:13 pm under Heart Disease

Heart valve disease is just what it sounds like.  It is a type of heart disease that affects the valves that flow to and away from the heart.  When those valves are not working correctly, blood can not move to and from the heart as it should.  In addition to not being able to pump blood throughout the body as it should, the heart is also strained because of this lack of flow.  Those that suffer from heart valve conditions are likely to have trouble doing physical exercise.  They are likely to also have symptoms such as breathlessness and swollen extremities.

If you find yourself with these symptoms, you should seek help as soon as possible because it can only worsen without help.  Yet, there are a number of treatments for this type of heart disease that can improve your conditions significantly.  For example, medications can ease symptoms and help the heart to improve its pumping function.  There are a number of programs of medications that your doctor is likely to provide for you.

In addition, there are a number of surgeries that can be used to repair the damage or problem with the valves that are causing the blood to flow incorrectly.  Some surgeries will be used to clear out the valves while others can be used to hold them open so that blood can flow through.  You and your doctor will determine the right solution based on a number of tests that they will do.

If you believe that you could be suffering from any type of heart disease including that of heart valve problems you should seek the help of your doctor as soon as possible.  Without any type of treatment, the end result can be a heart attack because the heart simply can not pump effectively.  Or, the lungs can fill with fluid.  In any case, help can be provided which can improve your heart’s function significantly.
