Before heading to your next yearly physical, answer this question: do you know what is high blood pressure? If you do not, you should ask your doctor about it when you have an appointment as high blood pressure can cause a number of illnesses that you are likely not aware of. Because high blood pressure aka hypertension is known as the silent killer, it behooves you to find out exactly what is high blood pressure, before you end up with a stroke or heart attack.

What is Normal and What is Not

As a point of reference, you should strive for a normal blood pressure reading of 120/80 mm HG as anything over it would answer the question of what is high blood pressure. Now, if those readings fell between 120/80 mm HG and 139/89 mm HG, you would be in the pre-hypertension stage which is a major red flag for you indicating you need to shape up your lifestyle. Smoking, fatty diets, excessive alcohol consumption, high stress and lack of consistent exercise are major lifestyle issues that could serve as the answer to what is high blood pressure.

First stage hypertension has blood pressure readings of 140/90 mm Hg to 159/99 mm HG and depending on your general health, the doctor may or may not prescribe medication along with necessary lifestyle changes. Most likely however, a diuretic aka water pill is the first line of defense in addressing the high blood pressure problem.

Answering the question of what is high blood pressure would likely lead you to the fact that there is a second stage of hypertension. The high blood pressure readings would be 160/100 mm HG and above and most people find out about it after suffering a heart attack or stroke, the two leading illnesses caused by hypertension.

Other Information

When you first hear about what is high blood pressure, you are likely to become freaked and you envision drugs for the rest of your life. As hinted above, the treatment for pre-hypertension is lifestyle changes such as a better diet, more exercise, quit smoking and drinking and lower your stress levels. If you are lucky enough to fall into this stage, you may be able to avoid medications all together but with hypertension in stage one and above, it is likely a fait accompli.

If your lifestyle is already relatively healthy and you still have hypertensive readings, perhaps the answer to what is high blood pressure for you lies within a pre-existing health condition or even medication you may be taking for an illness. In this case, consult with your doctor and get a full physical work-up along with family history as there may be some clue in your past or current health.

There are many conditions that can adversely affect the body. Some of these conditions could include cancer, diabetes, gout, etc. In addition, each condition manifests itself in the body in a particular way. This allows the physician to diagnose the condition and prescribe treatment.

Another condition that can affect the body is high blood pressure. High blood pressure can have extreme consequences if left undiagnosed and untreated. Therefore, it is important to know what is considered high blood pressure and what treatments are available for high blood pressure.

Things to Keep in Mind

When considering the question of what is considered high blood pressure it is first of all important to know what blood pressure is. Blood pressure is a combination of two measurements. These measurements reflect pressure of the blood as the blood flows against the walls of the arteries. The arteries are part of the cardiovascular system that transports the flow of blood that is oxygenated to organs and cells with the body.

The measurement of the pressure exerted against the walls of the arteries is reflected through the use of two numbers. The first number is called systolic and the second number is called diastolic.

Both measurements that comprise a person’s blood pressure are important. The first number of the blood pressure measurement measures the pressure at its highest. This is known as the systolic measurement. The second measurement, diastolic, provides a measurement of the heart when it is not beating or at rest.

Therefore, the answer to the question of what is considered high blood pressure is a measurement of 140/90 or higher. In addition, there are two stages within what is considered high blood pressure. Those two stages are stage one and stage two. Stage one is defined as 150 to 159 over 90 to 99 and stage two is 160 or higher over 100 or higher.

Treatments for High Blood Pressure

If that individual has answered the question of what is considered high blood pressure and answers that question personally in the affirmative, there are a number of options available to treat high blood pressure. Two of those options are through medication and exercise.

If the physician and the patient choose medication as the choice for controlling hypertension, there are a number of options available. One of the medications that can be prescribed is a beta blocker medication. A beta blocker medication simply causes the heart to beat slower and therefore decrease the pressure exerted upon the arteries.

One additional type of antihypertensive medication is a vasodilator. The affect of the vasodilator simply causes the muscle in the walls of the arteries to relax. This in turn causes the arteries to widen which in turn decreases high blood pressure.

One non-medication method of decreasing high blood pressure is through exercise. This exercise, in consultation with a doctor, can strengthen the heart and thus help to reduce high blood pressure. Examples of moderate exercise could include walking, using a treadmill, bicycle, weightlifting, etc.

Most people have an idea of what causes high blood pressure and yet they continue to eat, drink and be merry – often to excess. What they eat – a diet high in fat and cholesterol and what they drink – excessive beer, wine and other alcohol along with a sedentary lifestyle can be the trifecta death knell. The question of what causes high blood pressure would best be answered in what does not cause it!

Lifestyle Choices

Succinctly put above, how you live your life is the primary answer to the burning question of what causes high blood pressure. If you think you have a healthy lifestyle, you just might want to get your long overdue yearly physical and get your blood pressure checked. You could be unpleasantly surprised by a high reading during a routine office visit or even suffering an actual heart attack or stroke.

A diet low in fat and cholesterol and high in vitamins and minerals is what you need to turn that health tide in your favor. Cholesterol and fat clog the arteries, making the heart pump harder to get the necessary oxygen to your body. The hard work your heart must put out is a common answer to what causes high blood pressure and overexertion physically can exacerbate the problem.

The physical exertion leads to another lifestyle choice – exercise – and the fact that most people are not getting enough of it. You cannot count running around with your kids or walking through the grocery store because these are not routine, every day exercise options. You must create an exercise plan and implement it daily, incorporating strength training, endurance and aerobic activity for maximum benefit because otherwise, you can add your couch potato lifestyle to what causes high blood pressure.

Medications and Other Health Issues

Certain medications – over the counter, prescribed and even illegal – can be attributed to what causes high blood pressure. Everyone has different drug tolerances so what works for someone else may not work as well for you. These different reactions to medications contribute to what causes high blood pressure.

Miscellaneous health issues such as kidney disease, adrenal problems like Cushing’s disease, diabetes, aortic malformations and even sleep apnea are contributors to what causes high blood pressure. These diseases trigger reactions from the body which kick off events which contribute to high blood pressure. The human body can be an amazing thing and every function feeds off another making for a symbiotic relationship. So as you can see, it is not one particular thing that could answer what causes blood pressure but likely a combination of events.

Hypertension aka high blood pressure is often called the quiet killer and many people are not aware they even have it until they get sick with a stroke or heart attack. While hypertension may be silent, treating high blood pressure does not have to be and there are actually quite a few avenues to pursue to get this condition under control.

Understanding Your Blood Pressure Reading

To begin with, you should understand the different blood pressure measurements and how they may fall within hypertension range before treating high blood pressure. With a normal standard of 120/80 mm HG, anything above that reading is technically considered hypertension. It is also important to note that hypertension has three different stages – pre-hypertension, stage one hypertension and stage two hypertension. And depending on where you fall within those stages may decide how treating high blood pressure may occur.

Blood pressure measurements of 120/80 mm HG to 139/89 mm HG are considered the pre-hypertension stage while the first stage of full-blown hypertension is 140/90 mm HG to 159/99 mm HG. The second stage of hypertension is a blood pressure measurement of 160/100 mm HG or above and you can consider this stage serious business.

Your Treatment Options

When your readings fall within the pre-hypertension stage, consider yourself lucky because you probably will not have to endure treating high blood pressure daily through prescribed medications. Instead, your doctor likely will tell you to give up smoking and to drink only in moderation in addition to adopting a healthier way of eating and cutting down on your sodium intake.

The first stage of hypertension may involve one treating high blood pressure through the use of medications in addition to the requisite lifestyle changes. The most popular drug treatment for high blood pressure is the diuretic, also known as the “water pill.” This medication helps your body rid itself of excess sodium and fluids which often constrict your blood vessels, causing your heart to pump harder, thus raising your blood pressure.

With the second stage of hypertension, your doctor treating high blood pressure will go straight to probably at least two different medications in addition to requisite lifestyle changes. One medication will likely be the diuretic and the other could be any number of available drugs from beta blockers to statins. Treating high blood pressure, each one serves and targets hypertension in a variety of ways.

Treating high blood pressure with medications requires following the dosage amounts exactly as well as taking them at the same time of day. Your doctor will likely explain the importance of being diligent with your medications and taking note of any reactions that do not seem normal. No one treatment option is infallible, so be sure to take precautions and contact your doctor immediately should you feel something is wrong.

There are many diseases that individuals can contract. Some of those diseases can be moderate in pain while some diseases can be extremely painful. Also, some diseases can be abided while other diseases can cause death.

In addition, there are many treatments that an individual can engage in. Some of these treatments may help the person to keep the disease in check or some treatments may help to completely rid the body of the disease.

One of the common diseases that affect people is high blood pressure. Like most diseases there are ways to treat high blood pressure. Three of the common ways are through medication, exercise and diet.

Treat High Blood Pressure Through Medication

An often prescribed plan of action recommended by a personal physician to treat high blood pressure is through the use of medication. In addition, there are a number of anti-hypertension or blood pressure medicines that can be utilized.

Two of those types of blood-pressure medicines include a vasodilator type and a beta blocker. Both of these medications can produce the desired effect to treat high blood pressure and the choice of either one of these medications is dependent upon the physician and the patient.

A vasodilator medication is one in which the effects of the medicine help to relax the muscle walls of the blood vessels. This relaxation of the muscle walls in turn causes the walls to become dilated or widened. Ultimately this allows for the easier flow of the blood through the blood vessels.

Medications known as beta-blockers also have been proven to be a good way to treat high blood pressure. When taken, this medication reduces the heart rate slows the flow of blood which in turn lowers blood pressure.

Exercise Treatment

Another excellent way to treat high blood pressure is through exercise. As part of a doctor prescribed treatment plan exercise can help to strengthen the heart and increase the overall capacity of the cardiovascular system. This in turn allows the heart to become strengthened which can ultimately lead to a lowering of blood pressure.

Examples of moderate exercise that can be undertaken are bicycling, walking, weightlifting, swimming, etc. Again it is important that before any exercise program be undertaken that one should consult with their physician.

Diet

Another important part of a plan to treat high blood pressure is to eat properly. Therefore, it is important to reduce salt intake, the ingestion of high fatty foods which can increase the level of LDL cholesterol, etc.

In addition, it is important that the individual also reduce other habits that can increase high blood pressure. Specifically, those particular lifestyle choices include the drinking of alcohol and use of tobacco products.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a condition with potentially life threatening ramifications. If high blood pressure is left untreated, you may increase your chances of a heart attack or stroke quite significantly. This is because of the strain that an elevated blood pressure can place on your heart and cardiovascular system. Unchecked hypertension can also put undo stress on other vital organs like your kidneys and can even lead to loss of vision. It is important to recognize the symptoms of high blood pressure so that you can get into your doctor at the first sign of this condition, right?

Unfortunately, it is not so easy. There are rarely symptoms of high blood pressure that will present unless the pressure has already risen to dangerously high levels. These symptoms of high blood pressure might include a severe headache, nosebleeds, vision problems or confusion. You might also experience chest pain, an irregular heartbeat or difficulty breathing. Some people will have blood in their urine when levels get very high. If you experience any of these symptoms of high blood pressure, you should contact your doctor right away, since these sign could indicate that a serious problem is imminent.

Prevention and Screening

For most people however, there are no visible symptoms of high blood pressure. This can also be a serious problem, since unchecked hypertension can create numerous problems with your body over the long term. So what is a person to do to protect himself from this silent killer? The best advice is to know your risk factors and commit to regular blood pressure screenings so that you will know there is a problem before dangerous symptoms of high blood pressure begin to arise. You can be at higher risk of developing hypertension if you are a woman and post menopausal, African American or have a family history of the condition.

High blood pressure is also more prevalent in people who are overweight, sedentary and smoke or drink excessively. It is also possible for some medications or other medical conditions to cause high blood pressure. Although you may not experience visible symptoms of high blood pressure, if you fall into any of these higher risk categories, it is a good idea to have regular blood pressure screenings at your doctor’s office. If you have been diagnosed with prehypertension, a condition that often precedes high blood pressure, additional screenings may be required.

Symptoms of high blood pressure may not be typical in diagnosing this condition, but knowing your risk factors and getting regular screenings can go far in preventing, diagnosing and treating this disease before it reaches a dangerous level.

If you want to hear something scary about your health, then you should know that hypertension aka high blood pressure is a silent killer. Millions of people each year have it and show no signs of high blood pressure which often delays getting proper treatment, thus putting their life in danger. If you have not had your blood pressure checked lately, make it a point to see your doctor for your annual physical or at least visit a blood pressure machine kiosk in your neighborhood pharmacy.

No Solid Attributable Indicators

Hypertension is quite scary because you could have it for years with no signs of high blood pressure, although in hindsight (once diagnosed) you will discover that some of your seemingly unrelated health issues could be attributed to it. These seemingly unattributable signs of high blood pressure were likely passed off as having a bad day, a bit of a virus or just getting old.

Growing up, if you were not prone to headaches but started getting them as an adult, chances are they could have been credited to hypertension although you likely chalked it up to stress, allergies or even sinus issues. Occasional dizziness could be factored into signs of high blood pressure although at the time, you probably thought it was because you did not eat enough, you had an inner ear infection or you got up too quickly.

Those sporadic nosebleeds you may have gotten over the course of years could have been viewed as sinus problems or lack of humidity in your home but could have been attributed to signs of high blood pressure. Low libido or desire for sex is also a probably side effect to hypertension but again, you could have decided that you were just too stressed out and tired to perform.

As you can see, these supposed signs of high blood pressure taken by on their own really don’t mean much, especially if episodes have been spread throughout the years. It is no wonder that hypertension is deemed a silent killer … you wouldn’t recognize you had it unless you suffered from a heart attack, stroke or some other health complication caused by it.

What You Can do

What you can do is quite simple – get checked out by your doctor regularly and do keep your yearly physical appointments! Most people who learn they have hypertension find out by accident when they go to the doctor for a routine check-up for some other ailment. If you believe you are in fairly good health and are active, view the seemingly dissimilar signs of high blood pressure above with a new eye toward your health. If you are unsure, it doesn’t hurt to get that medical opinion and you are only out a few bucks in the scheme of things for your office visit.

If your blood pressure is considered high, you are at risk for other potentially serious conditions like heart attack, cardiovascular disease or stroke. This is why reducing high blood pressure is such an important step in a healthier lifestyle. In many cases, this goal can be achieved with a few diet and lifestyle changes that can help you drop extra pounds and get your cardiovascular system into healthier shape. However, diet and lifestyle modifications are not always sufficient at reducing high blood pressure to a significant degree. In these cases, medication is often the treatment of choice and there are a number of different options to explore.

Diuretics

One of the first medications that is often prescribed for reducing high blood pressure is a diuretic. Sometimes these medications are used in combination with other prescriptions, and sometimes they are used alone. A diuretic will reduce the amount of water and sodium in your body so that blood can pump more freely through your system. Some of the commercial names of diuretics include Thalitone, Lasix and Esidrix. In some cases of combination of diuretics may be prescribed for best results.

Beta Blockers

A medication that is commonly prescribed alongside a diuretic is a beta blocker. Beta blockers are effective at reducing high blood pressure because they make the heart beat slower so blood is able to go through your cardiovascular system with less force. These medications are recognized by the commercial names like Toprol, Sectral and Coreg. Beta blockers can be prescribed on their own for some patients, but are often much more effective when taken with a diuretic.

Medications that Inhibit Blood Vessel Constriction

Another effective means of reducing high blood pressure is to inhibit blood vessel constriction so that blood can pass through the system easier. These medications include angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers and calcium channel blockers. All of these medications are effective in reducing high blood pressure because they can block substances in the body that can constrict the blood vessels. One word of caution about calcium channel blockers; it is not a good idea to eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while you are taking these medications, since a harmful interaction can occur.

If you are concerned about reducing high blood pressure and diet and lifestyle changes have not done the job, perhaps it is time to talk to your doctor about your options in medications. With so many medicines available that are effective in reducing high blood pressure, you are sure to find the right treatment strategy for you.

High blood pressure is a condition that affects a lot of areas in the body without us even knowing that it is on the move. It is also known as hypertension and is a condition that is manifested by elevated blood pressure. There are many ways to reduce high blood pressure and these ways are essential to living healthily and well.

The efforts that you employ to help reduce high blood pressure will be rewarded with good health and a sense of well being. Even without any threat of the diseases that are connected to high blood pressure you need to be vigilant about heading towards an unhealthy lifestyle. To reduce high blood pressure is the aim of many people who strive to live healthy lives.

Changing One’s Lifestyle

One way to reduce high blood pressure is to be on a careful diet that limits one’s intake of salt and sodium. Sodium is one of the primary factors that lead you straight to high blood pressure. Fatty foods should also be avoided to reduce high blood pressure. A high blood pressure diet should be maintained in order for the individual to be healthy. This diet should limit one’s salt intake, fatty foods intake and alcohol intake.

Another way to help reduce high blood pressure is to exercise or just move around in order to get the blood flowing well. Exercise can help keep you in shape as well as get rid of the fatty deposits on the blood vessels that can be future causes of heart attacks or strokes.

Exercise or even regular long walks can help you reduce high blood pressure. Any form of movement that may entail cardiovascular exercise can be credited to help reduce high blood pressure. A word of advice for those who are already diagnosed with high blood pressure, you need to consult a doctor with regards the amount of exercise you need to help reduce high blood pressure. Trying to push yourself too hard may result in a heart attack or a stroke if you have no idea what is the extent of your condition.

To be able to reduce high blood pressure effectively, some lifestyle changes must be made. These changes to one’s lifestyle are actually very small things which one has abused a long time ago. Eating too much and drinking too much is an abuse of one’s body. Not exercising is taking your body for granted and leaving it to decay in to sickness and disease.

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension or PPH as it also called is a rare form of disease that is known to affect a person’s heart as well as lungs. In fact, the pressure in the pulmonary artery is known to increase dramatically. The reasons are often that pulmonary blood vessels have narrowed and that in turn leads to impaired pulmonary circulation.

Weakness and Breathlessness

Most often, the common symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension are experiencing breathlessness as well as weakness. When the disease is in its early stages, you may also experience fatigue and also dyspnea that are symptoms that can be confused with symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. What’s more, symptoms of Pulmonary Hypertension can often be quite similar to those of depression, anxiety as well as lung and heart problems.

However, one of the most common signs of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension is chest pain. Although, at the same time, it must be understood that there are as many as thirty other good reasons why a person experiences chest pain and many of the reasons are actually quite harmless.

It is thus necessary for you to consult a doctor whenever you experience symptoms that could be related to Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. You then need to explain to the doctor what exactly the problem is because it can actually be so serious that in some instances it even has led to early death because the symptoms were not treated in time.

Once you report that you are experiencing symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension, it is up to the doctor to check you and this he will do through use of X-rays, echocardiograms, and even tests with the help of cardiac catheterization which can determine the pressure in your blood vessels. If you are suffering from Primary Pulmonary Hypertension it will tend to be too high, which would otherwise be normal for those people that do not suffer from this condition.

To be sure, there is as yet no known reason why symptoms of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension develop. It could be due to taking of certain kinds of diet drugs, which in fact has even resulted in a number of lawsuits being filed against manufacturers of such drugs.

Primary Pulmonary Hypertension is also quite prevalent in babies. It definitely requires immediate treatment because this condition in babies can be very serious and may even necessitate operating the affected baby to close certain problematic blood vessels in order to save the baby.
