Women are just a bundle of emotions and hormones, especially when you hit puberty and again when you are going through menopause. These hormonal changes, particularly the levels of estrogen, can play tricks on your brain causing mood swings. Of course, the biggest mood swing of them all is depression and menopause can cause that in quite a large percentage of women, at least temporarily.

Combination Problem?

While the fluctuating levels of estrogen can definitely play a role in depression and menopause, some experts also say that the overwhelming symptoms of this biological change can also trigger depression too. Perhaps it is the unrelenting hot flashes, night sweats, sleep issues and fatigue that continually nag you into a depressive state. After all, it is hard to keep positive and present a smiling face to the world when there are so many overwhelming biological changes occurring.

Signs To Watch Out For

Depression and menopause should not be taken lightly as there are things you can do to combat the problem. However, you also have to be able to recognize the depression in menopause in order to be able to do something about it. The main issue at hand in regards to this matter is that the depression will likely affect your overall quality of life so it is important to recognize what is happening and get help for it instead of being stoic about it.

Having negative feelings about getting older and developing menopause are cause for concern as well as previous depressive episodes earlier in life like manic depression or even post partum depression. General health issues can also plague you causing depression in menopause like being overweight, not being active physically or socially or even drinking and smoking. All of these issues can be contributors.

Treatment Options

There are treatment options available for depression in menopause and talking with your doctor about them is your first line of defense. There are certain antidepressants like Paxil or Prozac that can help alleviate those depressive feelings as well as also cut down on other menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.

Changes in diet to include foods with phytoestrogens found in soy products and other legumes are important as well. While they cannot replace the estrogen, these plant-based estrogen hormones can help level out those hormonal cycles of highs and lows.

Herbal remedies for depression in menopause are also acceptable forms of treatment and are actually increasing in popularity. St. John’s Wort has been recognized as a mood booster and Ginseng, while more for memory recall, has also been proven beneficial as well. SAMe, a naturally occurring molecule that all living beings produce had been offered in the herbal remedy arena as a mood booster. What it does is help your body’s neurotransmitters communicate better as well as better regulate hormones.

It is important that before you embark on any “natural” remedy that you talk with your doctor about your menopausal depression symptoms as well as the pros and cons of trying herbal remedies. You want to make educated moves in regards to a treatment plan that will be the most beneficial to your health and psyche.

The relationship between depression, anxiety and insomnia is so close that there are times when a person is afflicted with these three conditions all at the same time. Study shows that people who are suffering from anxiety will most likely descend into depression if not treated early. On the other hand, people who are depressed at often too emotional disturbed that they could not sleep at night.

In some cases, insomnia comes first before anxiety and depression. People who have spent several sleepless nights often become anxious and depressed. In the end, whichever of these three conditions come first, people who suffer from depression, anxiety and insomnia often end up feeling too disoriented and tired that they could no longer go through their usually daily routines.

Dealing With Depression, Anxiety And Insomnia

The best way to deal with depression, anxiety and insomnia is to understand the signs and symptoms of these conditions. However, the signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia closely resemble each other that it is often difficult to isolate these symptoms from each other and attribute them specifically to depression, anxiety and insomnia. To help you understand your condition, it would be best for you to see a psychologist.

When seeing with the psychologist for the first time, make sure that you discuss with him or her you feelings. Do not withhold information from your psychologist especially when it comes to your emotional problems and concerns. You need not worry about privacy of information. Medical professionals are sworn to protect the privacy of their patients so nobody can see your medical records without a court order.

Your psychologist or therapist will rely on you to help him or her understand what you are going through so do your best to describe how you feel. Besides, talking about how you feel and naming your fears have a liberating effect so go ahead and unburden yourself. According to studies, depression, anxiety and insomnia can be caused by some deep-seated emotional pains so dig into your past.

Yes, going over some traumatic experiences can be quite painful but if you really want to come to terms with yourself, face your fears and your pain. Do not bottle things up inside you. Burying traumatic experiences deep within you may help you forget these experiences for sometime but sooner or later, these things will come to the surface and will cause havoc on your life.

The experience of menopause is one that varies greatly from one woman to the next, and one that can definitely be very challenging, both physically and emotionally. Although menopause is a normal event in every woman’s life, it is characterized most primarily by hormonal changes and so it is really no wonder then as to why so many women have such a tough time dealing with it.

A Response To Change

There is actually a very strong connection between menopause and depression, and studies have actually shown that depression is twice as common in women during menopause than at any other point in their lives. The symptoms of depression are the same during menopause and consist of two or more weeks of depressed mood, decreased interested or pleasure in normal activities, change in appetite and many more.

Depression that goes untreated or is especially severe can become dangerous, and can even result in serious physical complications. Depression is even associated with an increased risk for heart attacks and stroke, for instance, and so it is therefore very important that any woman suffering from depression, whether during menopause or not, seek medical attention immediately.

Menopause and depression can be a lethal combination, because although depression is always a serious condition it is even more so when it is connected to menopause. Menopause can trigger feelings of sadness and episodes of serious depression, and it is actually thought that between eight to fifteen percent of all women experience at least some level of depression during menopause.

Some theories assert the idea that it is the stress of the other menopausal symptoms that lead to depression as many women find that the symptoms associated with menopause are too intense and difficult to manage on their own. This is why it is so important for all women going through menopause to not only discuss their condition with their doctor but also that they keep friends and family members around them that are going to be there for them and support them during this tough time in their life.

When it comes to menopause and depression there are a few different methods of treatment available. The most important thing to remember is that if you ever begin to feel depressed you should seek help immediately and should not wait to see if it goes away or gets better. Also keep in mind that you are at an increased risk for developing depression during menopause if you have a history of mood disorders.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and other life factors, and a certain amount of anxiety is normal in the human body, however there is a point at which it becomes too much, and can even be mentally and physically debilitating.

For about one in every twelve people, anxiety is so persistent and severe that it creates serious difficulties in their life, and people with anxiety problems may be so constantly fearful and worried or be so scared of certain situations that they cannot face them, and this often results in serious problematic issues.

Attacking Anxiety and Depression Using Many Techniques

There are many ways of attacking anxiety and depression, and the first step involved in attacking anxiety and depression in any way is to determine which specific anxiety condition you have. The most commonly experienced types include social anxiety, agoraphobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Once you have determined the specific anxiety problem that you are suffering from, then you can really begin attacking your anxiety and depression. Although the specific methods of treatment that you should use will vary, depending on the particular anxiety condition you are suffering from, there are certain management options that are useful for basically all types of anxiety.

Attacking anxiety and depression can involve many techniques including learning about anxiety, relaxation and breathing techniques, cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, counseling, dietary adjustments, exercise, learning to be assertive, building self-esteem, structured problem solving, and medication.

Relaxation techniques are especially important in terms of attacking anxiety and depression, and anyone who feels anxious most of the time will have trouble relaxing, but knowing how to release muscle tension here will be very important. Relaxation techniques can include a number of different things, such as: progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, abdominal breathing, and isometric relaxation techniques.

Using the correct breathing techniques is also critical here, especially because the physical symptoms of anxiety may be triggered by hyperventilation, which results in raising oxygen levels and reduces the amount of carbon dioxide in the blood. It is important that a person who suffers from anxiety learns how to breathe from their diaphragm rather than from their chest, as this will help to safeguard against hyperventilation.

In order to make sure that you are breathing correctly, from your diaphragm, you can place one hand on your lower abdomen and the other on your chest, and correct breathing means that it will be your abdomen that is moving and not your chest. This will also help to slow your breathing whenever you are feeling nervous.

In today’s day and age there is much said about anxiety and depression that speaks in terms of a sense of hope. That is, when these conditions are described those who describe them do so in a manner that puts forth the notion that these psychological hindrances can be effectively treated and cured. While there have been great strides in the realm of treating these disorders, the past era of treatment has been marred with malpractice. Mercifully, we have (generally) moved beyond this past era. However, it is important to never forget what once occurred so as to avoid it from ever repeating itself.

Historical Derision Of Anxiety And Depression

Anxiety and depression have long since been historically considered traits of a weak personality. This is, of course, an inaccurate assessment that does not address the seriousness of the issue of suffering from the resultant effects of anxiety and depression disorders. In the realm of those who opt to stereotype people with psychological and psychiatric disorders, the conditions that the afflicted may suffer are faced with derision, scorn and outright disbelief. Sadly, this attitude is not exclusive to “laypersons” as there are even those in the medical field that may prescribe to such notions. In fact, such a negative attitude was once so common that most treatments for the psychiatrically disadvantaged crossed the line into severe abuse. Rather than distastefully drudge up common psychiatric treatments of decades past, it is best to say that what occurred in the 1950’s was reminiscent of what occurred in the 1500’s against “heretics.”

Pop Culture Changes The Perception Of Anxiety And Depression

While many have derided and mocked the daytime talk shows and television movies of the 1980’s and 1990’s, these programs did provide some decent social values until the quest for ratings in the midst of competition led to a circus environment of exploitation that ultimately killed the genre. Part of the positive social aspects that these programs served included showing people that psychological problems were common, that those who suffered from them were not alone and that treatment was possible and could be performed in a humane manner. Because of this media presentation, people stopped seeing those with psychological impairments as “crazy” and began to sympathize with their plight. As such, the ability for these people to seek treatment without fear of being branded was facilitated and we now have the more free and open environment we have today. Needless to say, this is a huge and welcome improvement.

Sometimes getting a good night’s sleep is difficult. Everyone has this problem once in a while as it is far more common that most people would assume. There are a number of factors that can contribute to having a restless night’s sleep. Sometimes something as benign as overly warm temperature can contribute to having difficulty dozing off. (This was famously parodied in a classic episode of MASH many decades ago) Of course, there can also be a number of serious factors that can contribute to being unable to fall asleep.

The sleep disorders depression anxiety connection is not one to be taken lightly as the inability to sleep or maintain solid sleeping patterns are often connected with serious underlying psychological and psychiatric problems.

Understanding Sleep Disorders Depression Anxiety and Their Connection

There are a number of serious psychiatric conditions that can exist beneath the surface of sleeping disorders. Bipolar disorder, General Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Behavior, etc can all contribute to the myriad of sleep disorders. Also, it must be noted that sleep disorders do not always refer to the inability to fall asleep. Some sleeping disorders involve the inability to stay awake.

In some cases, the inability to stay awake can later be combined with the inability to fall asleep as well. (This is common in bipolar sleep disorders depression anxiety combinations) As such, proper treatment will be required in order to offset such problems. Please note: the operative words in play here are proper treatment with the emphasis on the word PROPER.

Proper Treatment of Sleep Disorders Depression Anxiety Situations

The best way to treat sleep disorders depression anxiety, etc would be to have a complete examination by a psychiatrist. If the psychiatrist notes that a serious problem is present, then the psychiatrist will devise a solid out patient prescription care program that will alleviate the problems. Far too often, people will attempt to self-medicate with over the counter stimulants and/or sleeping aids.

These OTC products lack therapeutic value and do not truly address the serious underlying condition. As such, proper medical care is of the utmost importance. Of course, in order to do this the patient must himself realize that a serious problem may exist. If the patient does not take the potential condition as being a serious one, then the problem will never be effectively treated. So, if symptoms of a sleep disorder are seemingly manifesting, a person should seek medical care as soon as possible.

Good news for mental health patients suffering from depression. Recent research indicates that exercise can be just as, or even more effective than simply taking prescription drugs. For those accustomed to a life of inactivity, the prospect of daily exercise can seem overwhelming, Indeed, simply taking a pill can seem much easier and accessible than the commitment necessary to maintain a daily exercise regime. However, the cost and side affects associated with drugs makes the prospect of exercise as an effective therapy appear increasingly more attractive to doctors and their patients.  Â

Exercise therapy can be particularly more effective in patients who have not wholly benefited from drugs, although it appears almost anyone can benefit. Researchers at Duke University found that exercise can lift the mood of just about anyone suffering from symptoms of depression. In the Duke University study, 156 people suffering from severe depression were studied. On third of the group participated in an exercise regime for four months. Another third of the group also participated in an exercise regime, but their therapy was augmented with the use of the antidepressant drug Zoloft. The final third did not participate in the exercise program, but instead were only treated with the antidepressant.Â

The results were surprising and encouraging. The group that took no antidepressant drugs, whose treatment consisted solely of exercise, reported the greatest improvement. Although researchers were not able to pinpoint the exact ways exercise can help lift depression, the study revealed that exercise alone can be an effective treatment option for people suffering from major depression.  Doctors, it appears, have a new weapon in their arsenal against depression.Â

Some doctors speculate that exercise may be helpful for a variety of physical and psychological reasons. Exercise can improve appearance, thus boosting one’s self-esteem tremendously. Individuals suffering from major depression often complain of a physical and emotional “numbness.” Exercise can apparently “jolt” people out of depression by making them conscious of movement and their body at work. Exercise can also give people a sense of control. They can develop a sense that they are in charge of their own bodies, and over their lives. What other benefits might exercise have on people suffering from depression? Exercise helps counter the feelings of malaise and lethargy that accompany most bouts of depression. Exercise can help ease the physical pain associated with depression by increasing flexibility and strength. Backaches and headaches both appear to be eased by regular exercise. Exercise can also be a strong mood stabilizer. Exercise also helps ease insomnia and promotes healthy sleep pattern.

Exercise can also be very effective at reducing feelings of loneliness. Individuals suffering from major depression are encouraged to exercise with someone else or a group. This can help build a bond and support community that can be an invaluable source of security. Motivation appears to be one of the biggest obstacles that patients must overcome. Exercising with a friend or group can be excellent motivation. Committing to a supportive friend or group can help patients gradually make exercise a lifetime habit.Â

The Duke University study indicates that the positive effects of exercise can be sustained.Â

Unlike drug therapy, which can stop working if a patient ceases to take their medication, the effects of exercise can linger indefinitely. As long as patients continue to exercise regularly, it appears that the soothing effects of exercise will persist.Â

What type of exercise program is most recommended to individuals suffering from depression? Clinical trials are still being conducted to determine the best way to administer this type of exercise therapy. However, current research demonstrates that in order to receive the maximum benefits from exercise, patients should participate in a program that is at least nine weeks long. The exercise program should ideally be as performed five to six times a week. It appears that the longer and more intense the exercise workouts are, the more benefits the patient may expect to reap. However, any kind of exercise, including a short walk around the block, appears to be beneficial.Â

It is recommended that they consult their physician or mental health professional before beginning an exercise therapy program, particularly if they have not been active in year or are over 40.Â

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems that are among citizens today.  Depression may be a problem that you have genetically or it may be related to a difficult situation that is occurring in your life. If you feel like you are depressed, or if you know someone that is depressed, then knowing the different kinds of depression can help you in being able to find a cure and move past the depression.Â

No matter what type of depression that you may have, there are always several moods and emotions that are attached to it. These may differ from one type to another, but overall, these feelings remain the same. The most common emotion related to depression is a feeling of sadness towards life in general. As a result, hopelessness begins to become a dominant force in life. Worthlessness as a feeling that is focused around one’s life is also a problem that may occur. Those who feel guilty on a regular basis may also be resulting from depression.Â

There are also several common physical problems that result from the different kinds of depression. A change in appetite, causing weight loss or weight gain is a common occurrence. There is also a change in sleep patterns. Often, one with depression will sleep too much or not enough. A lack of energy, resulting in slower movements and slowed speech also is from the depression symptoms.Â

The first and most common type of depression is known as major depression. This type of depression can cause one to feel like everything is hopeless. They also carry a low self-esteem. For those that have this type of depression, there is usually a lack of interest in work, family, friends and other forms of activity. When it becomes worsened, it often will cause weight loss and may eventually lead to loosing control over daily activities.  Â

A second type of depression is atypical depression. This is similar to major depression with several kinds of the moods that are attached to it. A sense of hopelessness is the most common side effect that is experienced. However, atypical depression will often have periods of happiness and elations attached to it. Those with atypical depression are often times affected by events that occur externally. From these events, that person will then respond with an extreme mood of either happiness or hopelessness. Some of the physical symptoms that are seen with this kind of depression are oversleeping, overeating and weight gain.Â

A third known depression is psychotic depression. This type of depression differs from the other two in moods. Instead of effecting the emotions directly, this will affect the state of mind in which one is in. Those with psychotic depression often experience hallucinations that contain negative thoughts and feelings attached to them. Sounds and voices as well as visuals are common with this type of depression.Â

Dysthemia is a fourth type of depression that may occur. The moods that are attached to this include the feelings of being unimportant, dissatisfied, frightened and hopeless. Unlike major depression, however, those that have dysthemia don’t recognize it as depression. They feel that this sadness and hopelessness has always been a part of their lives, and as a result are less willing to get help. This depression also doesn’t experience any mood changes for long periods of time. The sadness is a way of being for these types of people.Â

Manic depression is one of the more severe types of depression. This is similar to atypical depression, only much more severe. Those who have manic depression will move from feeling sad and hopeless to being extremely happy. These changing mood swings are often times quick and can be severe. Those that have manic depression will have a high rate of suicide and suicidal thoughts as a result.Â

In each of these categories of depression, are also several factors that relate to this depression taking place. For example, postpartum depression is a common type of depression that occurs. There is also depression that results from the changes in seasons. Some will have depression occur as a result from a trauma or a disaster that has occurred in their lives. Many times, these depressions will hold some unique moods and reactions to them.

No matter what type of depression you, or a loved one, may have, it is important to find help right away. There are several anti-depressant medications available for the different types of depression. There are also several alternative methods that are available for healing, including herbal and natural methods. Depression, if not recognized and taken care of, can cause several problems in your life and not allow you to live to the fullest.

Depression is a mental illness that can cause several problems with your functioning of every day life. If you think that you have depression, there are several ways to diagnose it, as well as figure out how to not let it destroy what you are doing in your life.Â

The first thing that you need to do if you think that you have depression is to get a diagnosis by a doctor. You can see a physician or a counselor about your problem with depression. Through this, they can decide if it is depression, or if you are being affected by a different imbalance in your body. They are required to conduct an examination, interview and take certain lab tests.Â

Some of the things which should be recorded in relation to the depression factors include the history of the symptoms that you have, how long they have lasted and how severe the problems are. If you are using drugs or alcohol, it is important to let the physician know. Part of the measurement in severity includes thoughts of suicide or death. Another way in which they will decide if you are depressed is in relation to your family history. Depression is often considered a genetic disorder. If there have been signs of depression in your family, then you are more likely to become depressed. If these family members have received medication or help, this can also be helpful in deciding the right treatment for you.Â

From here, if it has been found that you are depressed, there are several ways in which you can receive the proper treatment and help. Depending on the type of depression that it has been found that you have, you can be given a certain type of anti-depressant medication. This will help you get from being depressed to being able to function every day. Sometimes, it will take time to find the right treatment in order to help find the right chemical balance. Usually, anti-depressant medications take three to four weeks to become effective. If you decide to take anti-depressant medication, you should be aware of the side effects that it will have. By doing this, you can plan accordingly so that you know when to begin taking the medication.Â

Another step in treating your depression is to get therapy from a counselor or psychotherapist. There are several who focus on treating depression specifically and are able to find the level in which you are thinking and help you change this mindset. Therapists are there to not only help you change this mindset, but also to help you learn different tools in order to function on a daily basis. Counselors range from being holistic healers to following a more traditional role. You can easily find a person that will suit your needs the best.Â

If you have a more severe case of depression and can’t find an anti-depressant to work, than you can always receive electroconvulsive therapy, also known as ECT. This process includes giving a muscle relaxant. You are then given anesthesia in order to take some of the pain out of the procedure. Electrodes are then placed in different areas around the brain. Electrodes are sent to these specific places. As a result, there is a seizure in the brain causing a way for the nerves in the brain to rebalance. If you decide to use ECT, you will have to do this three times a week, until the depression that you are experiencing lessens significantly.Â

For those that are looking for a different type of treatment for depression, there are several herbal remedies that can also be used. One of these is St. John’s Wort. This has received several studies and has been found mostly effective as an alternative method to anti-depressant medications. This type of herbal remedy, as well as others, is available for your consideration. These alternatives should also be given to you by your physician after examination.Â

No matter what type of depression you are dealing with, it causes a problem in daily functioning in your life. Depression is a genetic imbalance located in the nerves of your brain. Being diagnosed with depression is the first step to recovery. After this, there are several methods that you can use in order to begin functioning at a different thought level. By treating your depression, you will find that you can once again enjoy your daily life and accomplish your goals.Â

Depression is the most common of all the mental health disorders. Almost everyone will suffer from some form of depression in their lifetime, if only the occasional meeting with “the blues.” Though we are all somewhat familiar with the symptoms of mild depression, clinical depression is a much more serious form of depression that can lead to a whole host of emotional and physical problems.Â

Those of us who have suffered from occasional bouts of mild depression know that eventually we can “snap out” of it. We can treat ourselves to a new piece of clothing (’retail therapy’ to those familiar with this type of treatment), give ourselves a bubble bath, speak to a dear friend, take a walk around the block, and then gradually begin to feel better. Clinical depression is much more than this. People suffering from clinical depression have trouble with even the most mundane aspects of their everyday lives. They have trouble getting out of bed in the morning, they cannot function at work, have a hard time focusing on everyday tasks, experience fast weight gain or weight loss, and may find their personal relationships suffer. In some extreme cases, clinical depression can even be physically debilitating, with patients entering near catatonic states.Â

Individuals with depression are also likely to suffer from the following symptoms:Â oversleeping and daytime sleeping, an all-consuming sense of sadness or anxiety, general fatigue or malaise, lowered self-esteem, loss of sexual appetite, pessimistic outlook, feelings of guilt and/or worthlessness, feelings of restlessness, uncontrollable bouts of crying, back pain, headaches and migraines, and loss of interest in hobbies or other things that once brought pleasure.Â

People who suffer from clinical depression may find their symptoms worsening if they do not receive medical and psychological attention. Fortunately, more effective treatments are available than ever before. In most cases, the greatest obstacle to overcoming depression is not the search for appropriate treatment, but in simply taking that first step and seeking help. Over 19 million people in the United States suffer from depression. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only approximately one third of people suffering from depression ever seek out help. As long as people view depression as a personal flaw or weakness, rather than a legitimate disease, these statistics are likely to hold. Like any disease, depression needs to be treated by a professional. Even people with severe depression can vastly improve their quality of life with treatment.Â

There are many forms of depression, with chronic clinical depression being one of the most difficult to treat. One of the most common types of depression is Situational Depression. A death in the family, divorce, breakup, loss of employment, serious illness or other major life event can trigger a period of intense depression or grief. Situational Depression will usually lift, even if left untreated, although it may take several weeks or months.Â

Another more potentially serious form of depression comes in the guise of a Major Depressive Disorder. A major depressive episode can strike suddenly and unexpectedly. People who suffer from major depressive episodes are likely to suffer from chronic depression. Patients with a Major Depressive Disorder may also be more vulnerable to experiencing suicidal thoughts.Â

Another form of chronic depression is Dysthymic Disorder. Dysthymic Disorder is less severe than Major Depressive Disorder. Patients experience a sense of melancholy and dissatisfaction that can envelop them throughout their life. Dysthymic Disorder usually makes its appearance at an early age.Â

What causes depression? Doctors and scientists posit several theories as to why some people are more vulnerable to depression than others. Sometimes depression appears to run in families, and those born into a family with a history of depression are more likely to suffer from it sometime in their lifetime. Childhood trauma, loss of a loved one, or other major life events may also trigger depression. At its core, however, depression itself is a disease caused by chemical reactions in the brain, and it can always be treated.Â

Treatments for depression vary widely. The most antidepressant medications, cognitive interpersonal therapy, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy are all potentially efficacious treatments. Other complementary or alternative therapies may include light therapy (suitable for seasonal affective disorder), aromatherapy, exercise therapy, as well as various homeopathic therapies.Â
