(ARA) – You have probably heard that omega-3s are good for you, particularly the omega-3 fat DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Surprisingly, despite all of the reported health benefits of DHA, the American population is not getting enough of this important nutrient. In fact, the U.S. has one of the lowest average intakes of DHA in the world, and children are particularly at risk.

DHA is an important nutrient in promoting good health; nerve cells in the brain and eyes need it to function normally. DHA is particularly important during the first two years of life and early childhood. Between birth and 5 years of age, the human brain increases approximately 3.5 times in mass. It is important that children consume adequate amounts of DHA in their diet to support this period of rapid brain and eye growth and development.

When it comes to DHA, a good diet is crucial. You must get DHA through foods since your body cannot make enough of it on its own. To understand this healthy fat better, nutrition and wellness expert, Monica Bearden, answers some common questions.

Why do we need DHA?

DHA is important to both adults and children for healthy nerve cells in the brain and eyes. In adults, DHA can protect against the development of a number of chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In infants and children, DHA is essential for visual and cognitive development.

How much DHA do we need?

Adults should get a minimum of between 160 to 300 mg of DHA each day, according to the Dietary Reference Intakes and clinical studies. But American adults typically fall short, getting less than 50 percent of the recommended DHA intake each day. And while in the U.S. there are no formal guidelines established for DHA in children, some estimate that children should get at least 100 mg. Children also fall short and on average only get 40 to 50 mg per day.

Why are we not getting enough?

While the number of fortified foods available with DHA is increasing, it is sparse in our food supply. Children are especially at risk of a shortfall because when they are weaned from DHA-rich breast milk or infant formula, the foods and beverages that replace breast milk and formula are low in DHA, if they contain any at all. The main dietary source of DHA, fish, is not a staple of most kids’ diets, and concerns about contaminants, as well as the rise in food allergies, have reduced children’s fish intake even more.

Why should parents be concerned?

More than likely their child is not getting enough. Aside from needing DHA for normal brain and visual development, there is data to suggest that DHA deficiency is linked to learning difficulties and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. Making sure their child has adequate DHA intake from before birth on into childhood is one small thing parents can do to help their child’s growth and development.

What are good sources of DHA?

Good sources of DHA are cold-water fatty fish like canned salmon, canned tuna, wild Alaska sockeye or Alaska pink salmon. If you’re not a fish lover, there are many foods on grocery store shelves that are fortified with a vegetarian form of DHA made from algae called life’sDHA. For example, you can now find yogurt, milk, juices, breads, soymilk and nutrition bars with this vegetarian DHA. Make sure to look for “DHA” on the labels of your food choices to make sure you are getting the right kind of omega-3. In addition, certain eggs now contain higher levels of DHA. Interestingly, the chickens are fed a specially fortified DHA diet, which results in DHA-rich eggs. You can also take and give your children DHA supplements, but talk with your family doctor before taking any supplements or giving them to your children.

(ARA) – Chances are most people are familiar with the medical condition of epilepsy and the seizures that can be associated with the disorder. But many may not realize that epilepsy can range in severity, from mild to severe, and can be classified into syndromes, based on a number of factors, including the type of seizure a person experiences, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. One of the most severe forms of childhood epilepsy is Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a condition that causes multiple types and a high frequency of seizures (sometimes up to 100 a day) and presents profound challenges for patients and their caregivers.

Accounting for 1 to 4 percent of all childhood epilepsy cases, LGS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 1 and 5 years old. Patients experience a range of seizure types, including absence (staring) and tonic (muscle stiffening) seizures. But one of the most common and devastating seizures affecting LGS patients is the atonic seizure or “drop attack.” Characterized by a sudden loss of consciousness followed by a fall to the ground, the Epilepsy Foundation reports drop attacks can be the cause of significant injury in LGS patients, thus requiring many patients to wear protective helmets to avoid facial and head injuries.

Today, says Tracy Glauser, MD, Director, Comprehensive Epilepsy Program, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Ohio, continuing research on behalf of LGS and other severe forms of epilepsy are resulting in new medications that are proven to reduce seizures associated with LGS. “It’s exciting that new medical treatments are now available to reduce some of the most difficult seizures, such as drop attacks. As the goal of treatment for these severe conditions is to achieve seizure control as much and as early as possible, these new options are cause for hope for both patients and caregivers.”

Kim SanInocencio says this news is much anticipated by families touched by LGS. Mother of a 21-year-old son who was diagnosed with LGS at the age of 3, and co-founder of the LGS Foundation, SanInocencio says an LGS diagnosis is completely life-changing. “Every family experiences LGS differently, but we all share one thing in common, and that is living with the unexpected. Because day to day, the seizures — and the consequences — are different, we all live in great anticipation of new treatment options that could make a difference.”

Beyond the difficulties posed by multiple seizures, LGS can present other challenges as well. The severity of seizures can lead to developmental delays and behavioral problems, confronting families with multiple issues from what to do about schooling to how to keep their other children’s lives as normal as possible, according to www.emedicine.com. The condition also can result in financial and social challenges, as many parents are forced to leave their jobs in order to be full-time caregivers at home. Consequently, social isolation becomes yet another issue with which to contend.

Because LGS has multiple medical and other consequences for patients and families, Glauser says his best advice to caregivers is to partner with a physician who understands the all-encompassing nature of the condition and who will work with families to determine the best course of action for the patient.

SanInocencio agrees. “Caregivers must be advocates for their loved ones. By keeping the lines of communication open with physicians and other LGS families, we can all help to create a supportive environment to help each other cope with the challenges we face.”

(ARA) – Getting the flu can have serious consequences, especially for children. Every year, children in the United States get extremely ill and some die from influenza (“the flu”) and its complications. Richard Kanowitz knows this all too well — he and his wife Alissa lost their 4-year-old daughter, Amanda, to the flu four years ago.

“My wife and I didn’t realize how important one vaccination could be until we lost our daughter to the flu,” said Kanowitz, president of Families Fighting Flu (FFF), a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging parents to vaccinate their kids against the flu every year.

Flu education is especially important this year with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanding their flu vaccination recommendations. The CDC now recommends flu vaccinations for all children from 6 months through 18 years old, but parents may not have heard the news.

Say ‘Boo!’ to the Flu Pledges to Vaccinate More Families than Ever This Flu Season

Pledging to help get more families vaccinated this flu season, FFF, the Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA) and The Clorox Company have joined forces for the national Say “Boo!” to the Flu program. In its third year, the program aims to educate families on the importance of flu prevention with flu vaccination events in cities across the country.

“Say ‘Boo!’ to the Flu provides information on the new CDC guidelines and educates parents on the importance of getting kids vaccinated,” said Kanowitz. “If we can prevent a single death and spare a single family from going through what we went through, we will consider our efforts a success.”

Nearly 400 children have died from the flu over the past five flu seasons. Since the flu is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable deaths for children, Say “Boo!” to the Flu intends to spread the word about the simple steps you can take to help protect your family this season.

“It is crucial that parents are informed about the importance of a flu vaccination,” said Mary Ann Blade of the VNAA. “The reality is, influenza is a serious illness, and parents should take action to help protect their family, and especially their children.”

“Kids” of All Ages Get Vaccinated
Besides getting children from 6 months through 18 years old vaccinated, the CDC also recommends the vaccine for anyone in frequent contact with this group — meaning moms, dads and child care providers. The CDC estimates that vaccination coverage still remains less than 50 percent among high-risk groups, including young children.

Say “Boo!” to the Flu at Home
Vaccination is the first step in flu prevention, but families should also take these simple steps at home:

* Wash Hands Frequently: Wash hands with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds (the time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice).
* Disinfect Germ Hot Spots: Disinfect the surfaces kids touch most frequently — like doorknobs, light switches, faucets or plastic toys.
* Do the Elbow Cough: Cough and sneeze into your elbows instead of your hands to help prevent the spread of germs from touch.
* Follow Good Health Guidelines: Eat right, exercise, and get plenty of sleep to help boost your body’s ability to fight the effects of colds and the flu.

About the Flu
It is estimated that each year in the U.S. more than 20,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized due to the flu, and children less than 2 years old are even more likely to be hospitalized by the flu. Among children who died from the flu in the 2003-2004 flu season, 44 percent were healthy and had no underlying conditions.

Influenza, or “the flu,” is an easy-to-spread viral infection. The symptoms include high fever, chills, cough, aches and fatigue. A simple cough or sneeze can quickly spread the flu virus from person to person.

The flu virus can live on household surfaces, too. The flu may spread when a person touches a surface, like a toy, with the flu virus on it and then touches his or her mouth or nose. Help prevent the spread of the flu virus by getting vaccinated and disinfecting frequently-touched surfaces in your home.

Tragedia personal de una familia ayuda a conocer la importancia
de la prevención de la gripe

Campaña “Say “ Boo! ” to the Flu” se propone vacunar a más familias

Say “Boo!” to the Flu en su hogar

Even before they reach for the thermometer, parents can look for the following signs:

. Flushed face

. Hot, dry skin

. Low output of urine, and / or dark urine

. Not interested in eating

. Constipation or diarrhea

. Vomiting

. Irritable or fussy

. Lethargic or quiet

Getting that fever down should be the first priority for parents. If your child has a fever, doctors recommend reducing their temperature by using an acetaminophen based product, such as Children’s Tylenol to make them more comfortable. If the fever persists for more than three days, consult with the child’s physician.

(NC)-Fevers and children seem to go hand in hand, but that doesn’t make it any less concerning for a parent whose child falls ill and has a fever. When dealing with a feverish child, there are three main goals: reduce the temperature, prevent dehydration and monitor for a more serious illness.

A child’s temperature is considered a fever if it is higher than 38°C (100.4°F). When treating a child at home, the goal is to make the child more comfortable by reducing their temperature to under 38.9°C (102°F).

“The first step a parent needs to take with a feverish child is to get that fever down,” says family physician, Dr. Vivien Brown. “I recommend to my patients starting with an acetaminophen based product, like Children’s Tylenol. Then they can take additional steps like giving a bath in warm water and ensuring the child is not overdressed – even in the winter.”

The second goal is to keep the child from becoming dehydrated. Humans lose extra water from the skin and lungs during a fever. Parents need to encourage the child to drink clear fluids – ideally ones that are high in electrolytes and glucose – or eat some popsicles or jello.

Finally, parents need to monitor their child for signs of serious or life-threatening illness. Signs that a child should be taken to a physician include: having a fever for more than three full days, seeming confused or delirious, crying constantly without being able to be settled, or having a seizure / convulsions.

(ARA) — Each year, influenza and its related complications cause thousands of children to get sick, become hospitalized and miss school – and some even die. To help protect children from this serious disease, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases’ (NFID) Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition (CIIC) is urging parents to schedule an influenza vaccination this fall and winter.

“Too many children across our nation are vulnerable to influenza infection because they are not vaccinated. Annual influenza immunization is safe and it is the best way to protect our children from the most common types of the influenza virus,” said Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., FACS, CIIC Chair, 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006), President of Canyon Ranch Institute and Distinguished Professor of Public Health, The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health. “It’s important for all of us to help encourage the vaccination of children and their close contacts.”

Influenza vaccination is especially important for children and professionals in school and childcare settings because they are in close contact with other children, which can help spread the disease very quickly. Children may also be less likely to wash their hands frequently and “cover their coughs.”

“Most people don’t know that the influenza season typically peaks around February, and cases continue to be common for months after that, so getting immunized in early fall and throughout the winter is beneficial for children and, in fact, for everyone,” said Carol J. Baker, M.D., FAAP, FIDSA, CIIC Moderator, NFID President and Professor of Pediatrics, Molecular Virology and Microbiology, Baylor College of Medicine.

It takes approximately two weeks after vaccination to be fully protected against influenza, so parents, if they haven’t already, should schedule a doctor’s appointment to have their child and themselves immunized. Parents should also remember to plan ahead for children under 9 years of age who are getting vaccinated against influenza for the first time or who had only one dose in prior years. These children need two doses four weeks apart to get the best protection against influenza that season.

CIIC has launched a new Web site, www.PreventChildhoodInfluenza.org, to provide parents, caregivers and health care professionals with current information about influenza and influenza vaccination. It also includes an influenza flu risk calculator and a link for finding local flu shot clinics.

About Influenza
Influenza is a serious and potentially deadly disease that spreads very easily. Anyone can get influenza, but rates of infection are highest among children. Each year influenza causes more than 20,000 hospitalizations and nearly 100 deaths in American children younger than 5 years of age. To protect children from this serious and potentially deadly disease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all children, 6 months up to 5 years of age, be vaccinated against influenza every year.

Influenza comes on very suddenly. The symptoms usually include high fever, aches, chills, headache, cough, sore throat and a stuffy or blocked nose. Children, especially infants and toddlers, may only have fever and decreased activity or may have additional symptoms that adults usually don’t experience, including ear aches, nausea and vomiting.

Vaccination Recommendations
The CDC recommends influenza vaccination every year for all children 6 months up to 5 years of age. Vaccination is also recommended for any child at least 6 months of age with certain medical conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, heart disease, immune deficiency). These children are at increased risk for complications from influenza.

Women who are pregnant and their household contacts should be vaccinated to protect themselves from influenza and to help ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. Infants younger than 6 months of age cannot be vaccinated against influenza. Vaccinating pregnant women offers these infants passive immunity, but everyone who lives with or cares for these young infants needs influenza vaccine.

Despite CDC recommendations, influenza vaccination rates in children remain alarmingly low. For instance, only 20.6 percent of children 6 to 23 months of age were fully immunized for influenza during the 2005-2006 influenza season.

About NFID’s Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition
The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases’ (NFID) Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition (CIIC) was established to protect infants, children and adolescents from influenza by communicating with “one strong voice” the need to make influenza immunization a national health priority. CIIC members represent 25 of the nation’s leading public health, medical, patient and parent groups committed to protecting children’s health and encouraging wellness.

The Childhood Influenza Immunization Coalition initiatives are made possible through an unrestricted educational grant to NFID from sanofi pasteur. For more information on CIIC or childhood influenza, please visit www.PreventChildhoodInfluenza.org.

About the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases
The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) is a non-profit, tax-exempt (501c3) organization founded in 1973 and dedicated to educating the public and health care professionals about the causes, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases. For more information, please visit www.nfid.org.

(NC)-More than 70 per cent of all children may suffer a middle ear infection before the age of three and almost 20 per cent will experience at least three infections before the age of six. Chronic ear infections are disturbing and painful to your child, who may experience ear pain, lack of appetite and fever, among other symptoms. Also, as a parent it is not easy to watch your child suffer from a persistent infection.

Caused by the presence of fluid or pus in the middle ear, the condition can be chronic in some children. If your child has fluid in their ear they may experience temporary hearing loss which can lead to speech problems, changes to the eardrum and sometimes, permanent hearing damage. At this point your doctor may suggest an extremely common procedure for placing tubes in the eardrum to provide a temporary, “extra” tube to allow fluid to drain away from the middle ear.

To avoid any further infections once the tubes are in place, it is recommended that your child avoid getting water in their ears while swimming or bathing. Talk to your child’s doctor to determine the best way to treat and manage your child’s middle ear infections with tubes. The recommended treatment for any further bacterial infection is a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones in ear drop format. These ear drops are easy to use, quick to treat the infection and combined with an agent that reduces swelling, meaning the antibiotic can get to the source of the infection.

Dr. Michael Hawke is an ear, nose and throat specialist who practices in Toronto. He is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. An international authority on ear disease, Dr. Hawke has published 12 textbooks on diseases of the ears, nose and throat; several of which have been translated into other languages.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common behavioral conditions among children today. According to studies, about 80% of those children and adults who are suffering from this type of behavioral disorder have difficulty sleeping.

The same study shows that ADHD sleep disorders rank among the top ten cause why some people cannot sleep at night. Some people with ADHD sleep disorders stay awake in bed for around two to three hours before they finally get some sleep. In most cases, the stress of not being able to sleep right away trigger other forms of psychological and physiological imbalance in the person that he or she becomes prone to depression and other forms of mental problems.

Although scientists and researchers are still conducting further studies into the causes of ADHD sleep disorder and there are still no concrete scientific explanations as to what causes this type of behavioral disorder, some experts believe that ADHD sleep disorder may be attributed to the diet and the heredity of the person. According to some experts, food that contains preservatives and synthetic additives may cause some side effects in our bodies such as hyperactivity especially in children and some young adults.

Dealing With ADHD Sleep Disorder

If your child is having difficulty focusing on his or her task and he or she is having so much trouble getting some sleep, it would be better for you to consult your doctor. Do not just assume that your child has ADHD sleep disorder if you can’t sleep. According to studies, ADHD is not the only cause for lack of sleep, so do not jump into conclusions right away and request for some tests.

Always remember that insomnia is a complex thing and may be caused by a combination of factors. The only way to determine the factors that caused insomnia in your child is to consult a doctor who is specializing in sleep disorders.

If the results of the tests performed by the doctor say that you child is indeed suffering from ADHD sleep disorder, discuss the different forms of treatments with your doctor first to make sure that your child is getting the best from of treatment. Some doctors may recommend some drugs to help your child.

If your doctor recommends the use of drugs to help your child, discuss with the doctor the possible side effects that these drugs have on your child. You need to make sure that these drugs will not cause more harm than good on the health of your child.

Ask your doctor how you can help your child relax and focus on his or her tasks. Note that as a parent, you are in the best position to help your child go through this situation and find solutions to the problem.

Children are, sadly, often faced with serious medical problems that are usually associated with adults and adult behavior. Unfortunately, while there is a significant difference in age between an adult and a child there is no difference between the negative impacts the disorder may have on the child in comparison to the effect that it may have on the child. Then again, there exists the possibility that the effects of the disorder on the child may be more dramatic that the effect the disorder may have on an adult.

In the case of insomnia in children, the effects can be quite dramatic. A child that suffers bouts with insomnia may experience a number of residual effects that can make the child’s life difficult. A poor night’s sleep can lead to a lack of performance in school, an inability to maintain a social life and a host of other problems. As such, proper treatment of insomnia in children is critical and such proper treatment always starts with a proper diagnosis.

Ascertaining a Proper Diagnosis of Insomnia in Children

It can never be understated enough that it is critical that a proper diagnosis of insomnia in children is critical in order to arrive at the proper treatment. As is common with many disorders, there is an unfortunate tendency in parents to not take a potentially serious condition as something that is actually serious.

While insomnia is something that most people will deal with at one point or another, when the problem becomes continual, there exists the possibility that a serious underlying condition may be present. If a parent does not take the presence of insomnia in a child serious, then the ability to arrive at a proper diagnosis and, of course, proper treatment will be seriously delayed. Needless to say, this does not help the child at all and may, in fact, lead to the underlying condition worsening.

Insomnia in Children and the Parent’s Role

As such, if a parent notices the presence of insomnia in children, it is the parent’s responsibility to make sure the condition is properly treated. A parent’s primary role is that of a caregiver to a child and if the parent neglects this responsibility, then the ramifications can be dire.

Because of this, no parent should ignore any potentially serious condition. Insomnia may not seem like a serious condition on the surface, but a superficial analysis of a problem by an untrained eye is not the way to arrive at a diagnosis; see a professional instead.

An incidence of constipation in a child can become a chronic problem rather easily if it is not handled properly from the beginning. If a child passes a hard stool that is painful, he will not want to go through that experience again. Consequently, he may begin to hold his bowel movements in, causing him to become more constipated. The stool will become hard and painful to pass, and the cycle will simply begin repeating itself over and over again. It is important for a parent to gain control of the situation as quickly as possible so that the child will willingly sit on the toilet and the stools will soften and become less painful to pass. This can be done both through diet and behavior modification.

Dietary Changes to treat your Child’s Constipation

The first course of action in treating your child’s constipation is to modify his diet to include more fiber and cut back on foods that create constipation. High fiber foods include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, especially corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and peas. You can also increase the fiber in your child’s diet by offering a large selection of whole grain cereals and cereal bars, graham crackers and whole wheat bread. Increase fluids that your child is drinking by offering additional helping of juices and water. Vegetable soup will give your child a double dose of constipation treatment, with a large serving of vegetables as well as an extra serving of fluids.

While you are increasing the fiber intake in your child’s diet, cut back on the foods that are known to cause constipation. These can include milk products like yogurt and cheese, and some fruits and vegetables like cooked carrots or bananas. If you are concerned that milk might be contributing to your child’s constipation, talk to your doctor before taking your child off of milk entirely. There are many nutrients in milk that a child’s growing body needs, and if you decide that he must refrain from milk entirely, he will need to get those nutrients from other foods and supplements.

Behavior Changes to treat your Child’s Constipation

Another method for treating constipation in children is behavior modification that gently encourages your child to use the toilet regularly. This can include putting your child on the toilet for ten minutes after meals twice a day, when the bowels are primed for the elimination function. You can also offer reward incentives to your child for successfully going to the bathroom, like offering stickers after using the toilet. To take the fear of hard stools away from your child, your doctor may suggest or prescribe a stool softener that will make it easier for your little one to go to the bathroom without pain.
