When it comes to one’s health, there can never be enough precautions taken. That is to say, it is always a smart move to avoid involving oneself in activities or lifestyle choices that can cause harm. However, it is also unfortunate that many people do not realize how dangerous some activities are or what are the inherent risk factors that contribute to the onset of a particular condition.

Let’s take cancer as an example: many people understand that smoking brings with it a serious risk of lung cancer. As such, many people will quit smoking or they will never pick up the habit in the first place. Now, the public knowledge of the association between smoking and lung cancer is generally well known, but what a bout other forms of cancer?

For example, despite the fact that skin cancer is a rather common form of cancer very few people understand or can recognize the common skin cancer risk factors. As such, it is critical to look at, examine and assess these skin cancer risk factors so that those who would wish to take necessary precautions to avoid this form of cancer are able to do so.

Understanding the Common Risk Factors

Essentially, the most prevalent skin cancer risk factors derive from the fact that excessive exposure to ultra violet rays will greatly increase a person’s chance of developing skin cancer. Now, the most common source of ultra violet rays is the sun but there are also artificial ways in which one can acquire excess exposure to ultraviolet rays. The most common of these artificial means would be exposure to tanning salon beds.

As such, limiting one’s time in a tanning salon would greatly reduce skin cancer risk factors in the same manner that reducing one’s exposure to the sun would reduce these factors as well. Ultimately, if one avoids excessive contact with ultra violet rays then the chances of developing a skin cancer condition will be greatly reduced.

Seeing a Doctor

If there was any major, primary form of advice that could be put forth it would be the notion that it is always best to see a doctor and discuss skin cancer risk factors. It is also strongly recommended to have a comprehensive check up performed so as to examine any potential existence of skin cancer. If the skin cancer is caught early enough then the ability to properly treat it will be greatly increased. This is the best possible advice that could be put forth on the subject.

These days, nearly every medical professional you come into contact will be sure to preach to you the benefits of skin cancer prevention and this is not very surprising because organizations such as Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation have shown us that as many as, it is believed, one million Americans are victims of some kind of skin cancer or the other which was the case in the year 2005.

Use Of Tanning Beds Continues All Year Round

Still, it is quite surprising to also find that despite these and other medical evidence that highlight the need for skin cancer prevention, there is no stopping the American population in its single minded focus on using things such as tanning beds, and taking to sunbathing without proper preventive measures being considered or acted upon.

Another finding with regard to skin cancer prevention is that it is often something that most people associate with the older generations and this is amply evident when you consider how much time is spent under the sun by youngsters and other that are not so old people, who just don’t seem to know or care about skin cancer prevention, or if they know about it, pay scant heed and are thus sure to become the next number in the growing number of statistics showing a surge in skin cancer diagnosed cases. One of the culprits in this regard is the tanning beds that are often used right through the year and thus helps put your skin at risk of contracting skin cancer.

Still, it pays to learn about skin cancer prevention and perhaps a good starting point in this regard will be to realize the necessity of being sun safe and this is especially pertinent with regard to those with hair and skin is light in color that are most at risk of developing skin cancer. And, if someone in your family has had skin cancer, then you should learn up on skin cancer prevention because you would be more at risk of developing the condition since it is known to be genetic by nature.

Even as simple a skin cancer prevention method such as using sunscreens is something that everyone can act on, and using sunscreens that are waterproof as well and which have SPF 15 or better of UVA as well as UVB protection is recommended for use. Using a minimum of an ounce of sunscreen on your body about twenty minutes prior to getting out in the sun is another useful tip for skin cancer prevention.

The identification of skin cancer can save your life and so it is important that you are educated on this matter even if you do not have a family history of the disease.

Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a disease in which the cancer is found in the outermost layers of the skin. There are three most common types of this cancer, which are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Of the three, melanoma is by far the most serious and dangerous. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer and in regards to skin cancer identification, this type of cancer typically appears as a small raised bump that has a pearly appearance.

Then there is squamous cell carcinoma, and skin cancer identification here is most easily made, as the cancer usually shows up on the areas of the body that receive the most sun, including the lip, hands, and forehead. This cancer usually appears as a firm red bump or ulceration of some sort that does not heal regularly.

Finally there is melanoma and this particular type of skin cancer is easier to identify than any other. This skin cancer arises from the melanocytes in the skin and arises as pigmented lesions in the skin with an irregular shape, border, and multiple colors.

Diagnosis

Whenever you even think that you may have identified skin cancer it is crucial that you make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible so that you can get a proper assessment and diagnosis. Then if it turns out that your skin cancer identification was correct and you do in fact have the disease, you will be able to get the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment is crucial to the effects of the cancer and it can even be potentially life threatening if left unnoticed or untreated for an extended period of time. If it turns out that you do have positive skin cancer identification and require treatment, there are a variety of different treatments available including surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Although there is no surefire way of preventing skin cancer it is important that you know there are certain risk factors, such as overexposure to ultraviolet light, fair skin, and genetics, as skin cancer tends to run in families.

While risk factors will not indicate that you will definitely have a cancer diagnosis at some point in your life, it does mean that your chances of that diagnosis might be higher than that of other people without the risk factors. On the other hand, a lack of risk factors doesn’t mean that you definitely won’t get the disease. Annual screenings are still an important part of skin cancer prevention for everyone. However, knowing that you have a risk factor, like a family history of skin cancer, will tell you that you need to be even more vigilant about watching your skin and talking to your doctor about any possible concerns.

All in the Family

As with other types of cancers, a family history of skin cancer does increase your odds of having the disease. Statistics show that people who are diagnosed with melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, have a one in ten chance of having a family member with the disease as well. The statistics will vary based on which family members have had the illness. If it is a first-degree melanoma that has been diagnosed with melanoma, you will have a 50% higher chance of developing the illness than someone who does not have this family history of skin cancer. This means that if you are diagnosed with skin cancer, your doctor will probably recommend that your immediate relatives begin getting regular skin cancer screenings as well.

There is another family tendency that doctors will look at closely when it comes to a family history of skin cancer. Some people have moles that are not cancerous yet, but stand a greater chance of becoming malignant at some point. This syndrome is called Familial Atypical Multiple Mole Melanoma Syndrome, or FAMMM. This means that if you or a family member has any of these types of moles, you will stand a greater chance of developing melanoma. In these situations, your doctor can advise you on how often you should have skin cancer screenings done.

Other risk factors for skin cancer include fair skin, a presence of moles on the body and sun exposure resulting in burns. Any of these factors, along with a family history of skin cancer should be discussed with your doctor so that a screening schedule can be determined. Early detection is the key in effectively treating some types of skin cancer. Knowing your risk factors, like a family history of skin cancer, can help you to know how often to screen yourself for this disease.

Skin cancer is a disease in which cancer cells are found in the outer layers of the skin, rather than actually inside the body as with most cancers.

There are several different types of cancer that can start in the skin. The most commonly sought after information on skin cancer is about basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer, and although skin cancer can affect anyone of any age, it is much more common in people with light colored skin and those who have spent a lot of time in the sunshine. This is because an overexposure of ultraviolet light is one of the most major contributing factors to the disease.

Melanoma

Melanoma is another very popular type of skin cancer, information for which is widely available. Although it usually occurs in adults there have also been many cases where it has been found in children and adolescents. Melanoma is considered as being a much more serious type of skin cancer than both basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer, and like most cancers it is best treated when it is found and diagnosed early.

Signs and Symptoms

There are many different signs and symptoms that most people experience when they develop skin cancer, and so if you notice any of these it is important that you get to see your doctor as soon as possible in order to ensure that everything is fine. This is because if you do in fact have skin cancer then you will be able to get proper treatment as promptly as possible.

Information on skin cancer teaches us that the cancer typically first appears as a growth or abnormal accumulation of cells and even sometimes takes the form of a sore or pimple that does not heal over time. It can occur on almost any area of the skin and sometimes is so subtle that it can be present for several months, even years and the person is not aware of it.

When studying more information on skin cancer, we realize that moles are also often a sign of this cancer, but it is important to remember that just because you may notice any of these signs and symptoms it absolutely does not mean that you have cancer. So before you jump to any conclusions you should speak to your doctor to find out what is really going on.

There is no real surefire way to prevent yourself from developing skin cancer, but reliable information provides you with a few preventive measures you can take. These include staying out of the sunlight or at least using proper sun protection when you do, and engaging in regular exercise.

When it comes to skin cancer there are many different issues that you need to take into consideration. The definition of skin cancer is perhaps the most important issue of all here, and is important for everyone to be aware of and educated about, even if they do not have a family history of the disease.

To understand skin cancer’s definition you have to learn how skin cancer spreads. The outer layer of the skin, or epidermis, contains three different kinds of cells and each type of cell can potentially become cancerous. Although there is no single known cause of skin cancer there are a number of different factors that are known for being responsible. The more time you spend in the sun, for instance, the higher risk you are at for developing the disease.

It is important to know, in terms of skin cancer definition that all forms of skin cancer begin with a single cell. This is why the more immediately the cancer is noticed the better odds the patient has in terms of success.

Types of Skin Cancer

When it comes to the definition of skin cancer, one of the most important pieces of information is the fact that there are three different types of skin cancer: basal cell cancer, squamous cell cancer, and melanoma. The basal cell cancer is the most common of all these cancers, but also typically the least serious.

Then there is the squamous cell cancer which is the next most common skin cancer but which is more serious than basal cell. It grows more quickly than basal cell cancer and can spread to other parts of the body, especially to the lymph nodes, which are small round or oval bodies that are part of the body’s immune system.

Finally the melanoma type of skin cancer is by far the most serious and most aggressive. It can and does spread to other parts of the body incredibly quickly and can even invade the lungs and liver. Melanoma is typically caused by an overexposure to the ultraviolet radiation given off by the sun. However, other factors can also be causes such as genetic factors, as a person who has a family history of the disease is much more likely to develop the disease themselves.

It is critical to understand the definition of skin cancer even if you are not particularly at risk yourself. This is so that you can be educated and take all the precautionary steps you can in order to protect yourself against the disease.

Probably, the most cited skin cancer cause is being exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time, and more especially to the dangerous ultraviolet radiation, and the risk becomes more when living in areas where there is intense sunlight. Also, with depletion to the ozone layer, the chances of being affected by skin cancer have increased since you are protected from ultra-violet rays only by the ozone layer.

Fair Or Dark Skin

Among the not so well known skin cancer causes is that people who are of fair skin and thus have less amount of melanin are more susceptible to developing skin cancer. However, there is no real known skin cancer causes though it is believed that squamous cell carcinoma as too basal cell carcinoma are thought to be related to sunlight’s accumulation during a person’s lifetime, and that people with fair complexion are more susceptible to developing such tumors than those with dark complexion.

There is almost unanimity in believing that among the major skin cancer causes is exposure to the sun since ultraviolet rays from the sun can damage the DNA that in turn will lead to the development of skin cancer, and that according to estimates, two thirds and more of all malignant melanomas and as much as ninety percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are attributed to high degree of exposure to the sun.

Furthermore, it is also believed that among the probable skin cancer causes are people having fair skin, red or blond hair, blue, hazel or green eyes, freckled faces, those whose skin tans poorly and burns easily, people with plenty of moles, and those who have a family history of skin cancer are more likely to develop skin cancer. In the same vein, if your skin is of dark color, you would be twenty times less at risk of developing skin cancer than is the case with Caucasians.

Another not so well known skin cancer cause is the sunbed that is closely linked to malignant melanoma, and according to studies on several sunbeds and cancer, the conclusion arrived at was that young people who were less than thirty-five years of age who were using sunbeds were at seventy-five percent greater risk of skin cancer.

A person is considered as having skin cancer when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, which most typically occurs as a result of skin being overexposed to the sun. There are also many other factors that are considered as being able to cause skin cancer however, so sunlight is not the only factor responsible here. There are actually three basic types of skin cancer which are: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.

Melanoma is considered as being the most serious and severe form of the three, and is also more difficult to diagnose and treat. It affects the deeper layers of the skin and also has the greatest potential to spread to other tissues in the body. One of the most frightening facts of all regarding skin cancer is that all three of these types of skin cancer are on the rise, in both adults and children. However they can be prevented by limiting or avoiding exposure to ultraviolent radiation, engaging in proper and regular exercise, and paying attention to any suspicious changes in your skin.

Effects of Skin Cancer

When it comes to the effects of skin cancer, there are many. The effects of skin cancer on a particular patient will depend on a few factors, namely if they have the following conditions or characteristics: light skin color, history of severe sunburn, family history of skin cancer, large dark-colored birthmarks, and HIV.

The effects of skin cancer can be incredibly damaging to anyone however, especially if it is left unnoticed and untreated for an extended period of time. This is because the longer skin cancer – or any type of cancer for that matter – is left untreated, the longer it is able to negatively affect the body and possibly spread to other parts of the body as well.

Although there is no surefire way of preventing skin cancer, there are many preventive and precautionary steps that you can take in order to guard yourself against skin cancer and its effects as best as possible. If you do end up developing the disease however, it is important that you get yourself in to see your doctor as soon as possible in order to discuss the available methods of treatment and what the best treatment plan is going to be for you and your particular condition.

Your health care provider will continue to check you regularly even after treatment, particularly by looking for any new, changed, or unusual moles or spots on your skin.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, affecting one in every five people every year. However, it can also be one of the most treatable forms of cancer, particularly when it is caught early. This is why it is so important for everyone to familiarize themselves with general information about this disease, and learn how to separate the facts from the fiction when it comes to skin cancer. Of course, the best person to answer any of your questions or concerns about cancer is your doctor. But you can arm yourself with some basic information that will help you to reduce your risks of this type of disease.

Skin Cancer, Skin Tones and Sun Exposure

One of the first and easiest things that you can do to reduce your risk of skin cancer is to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun. But first you need to understand the facts about sun exposure. First, exposure to these rays can occur even on cloudy days. Second, UV rays can penetrate clothing, especially garments that are light-colored and made of lightweight fabric – like the type of clothing that is typically worn in warmer weather when the sun’s rays are brightest. Finally, dangerous UV exposure can also occur when sunlight reflects off of the snow or shines through glass windows, like in your car.

Some people think that if they head to a tanning salon to catch that golden glow, they are somehow safer from the risks of skin cancer. Not so. The lights in the tanning booths emit the same type of UV rays that the sun does. This means that use of tanning booths can indeed increase your risk of skin cancer. In fact, spending time at these tanning salons prior to the age of 35 can increase your chances of being diagnosed with this type of cancer by as much as 75%. This statistic alone should be a good reason to greatly limit the amount of time you spend under tanning lights, or make you bid farewell to tanning salons completely.

It is also a common belief that people with darker skin tones cannot get skin cancer. While it is absolutely true that having fair skin can greatly increase your risk for this disease, darker skin tones can have problems as well. The big problem arises when people with these skin tones do not bother to protect their skin from the sun’s rays or head to their doctor for early skin cancer screenings. The later skin cancer is detected, the harder it is to treat, meaning that people with these skin tones may not get cancer as often, but when they do it is usually found in the more advanced stages.

While skin cancer can be a scary diagnosis, you cna reduce your risk. Reducing your sun exposure is a good first step. You should also go in for annual skin screenings with your doctor, since early detection is a key in an effective treatment plan. Skin cancer happens, but you can take steps to keep your skin safer.

Melanoma cases have been steadily rising over the past few decades and this may be attributed to the ozone layer becoming damaged and at present it ranks seventh in terms of common cancer in the US, and from an estimated risk factor of one in fifteen hundred cases in 1935, it has reached the alarming number of one in seventy-five by the year 2000. Though people aged between twenty and thirty can be affected by melanoma, it most often affects persons in their middle to late fifties.

Skin Involvement

Prognosis for melanoma is mainly dependent on the how involved is the skin as well as on the tumor’s thickness and there are some patients who, in the early melanoma stages can only be cured with the help of surgery, and if cure is not possible, then patients could survive for months or even years and it depends on how well he/she responds to treatment and the duration of such response.

Another aspect to prognosis for melanoma is that it is believed that sun exposure can increase the patient’s chances of survival and also help reduce risk of lymph gland cancers. Also, when considering prognosis for melanoma, you may need to consider the chances of complications occurring of melanoma, probable outcomes, how good or bad are the chances of recovery, the period of recovery for melanoma and the survival rates as well as death rates. In addition, you also need to consider any other outcomes that may probably arise during the prognosis for melanoma though most forecasts would generally are unpredictable.

There no doubts that melanoma is a very (perhaps, even the deadliest) form of skin cancer and it can be cured provided it is found out when it is still in its very early stages. It could require having the thin melanoma removed through surgical means which should cure the ailment and remember also that when the melanoma is particularly thick, the chances of survival are that much lower.

Furthermore, melanoma is curable provided it is both diagnosed as well as treated at a stage when the tumor has not become too thick and also has not invaded the patient’s skin too deeply. When melanoma is allowed to grow from its early stages, cancer cells could grow into the skin and invade the tissues and it could then spread even further and thus become hard to keep under control. Thus, it behooves to get prognosis for melanoma at a very early stage, if survival and cure is to be made possible.
