When a person suffers from sleep apnea, as determined by undergoing a polysomnogram, it is often caused by obstruction of the airway during sleep. There are different treatment options that be discussed by the doctor and the sleep specialist and they will offer the option best suited for each patient. One of the available options is the sleep apnea pillow, approved by the Food and Drug Administration, designed to help keep the airway open during sleep.

Breathing masks, dental devices and other mechanical methods for keeping the airway open during sleep have been developed, but not everyone needs the more restrictive devices to be able to sleep through the night. A sleep apnea pillow may be enough for some patients to achieve the positional change they need to ease their breathing while sleeping. With obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles in the throat and tongue become relaxed while sleeping and fall into the airway. Sometimes a simple repositioning of the head, with a sleep apnea pillow, can alleviate the problem.

Just as when a person is having difficulty breathing, their head is positioned to open the airway as much as possible. Consider when a person is being ventilated and how their head is tilted back to keep the throat open. They may also use nasal strips to help airflow through the sinuses, but without their head being in the right position, like when using a sleep apnea pillow, their throat restricts the amount of air they can breathe in.

With Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Gravity Is Not A Friend

Persons suffering from obstructive sleep apnea will especially have trouble sleeping on their back, as their throats may be narrower, restricting their ability to breathe. A sleep apnea pillow is designed to keep their head tilted slightly back, still in a comfortable position, and keep their throat open to breathing regularly. A sleep apnea pillow is not the right treatment for every sleep apnea patient, and only the doctor can determine which treatment method is right for each individual.

Breathing masks that provide continuous positive airway pressure are prescribed for many obstructive sleep apnea sufferers, while losing weight, mechanical devices to keep the airway open and avoiding muscle relaxers such as alcohol to help keep the throat open for breathing. For less restrictive sleep apnea, a sleep apnea pillow may be the only device needed to help the person continue breathing throughout the night. By keeping the head back and the airway open, they may not need a breathing mask or other device.

The enormity of the problem known as sleep apnea can best be gauged from the fact that in the US alone there are as many as, it is believed, twenty million sufferers and worse still, about ninety percent of these cases are not even detected, which can cause grave repercussions in the future. However, there is a lot being done to treat this problem and as there are many sleep apnea new treatments being developed there is every reason to hope that these treatments will be able to do something positive and be more effective in treating the condition. It is hoped that as each development in sleep apnea new treatments takes place, we will be able to live a better life and enjoy improved health as a result of getting proper and adequate sleep at night.

No Longer Being Deprived Of A Good Night’s Sleep

In fact, because of breakthroughs in the treatment of sleep apnea, suffering from this condition does no longer mean that you will be deprived of sleep at night. With many more sleep apnea new treatments becoming known to the medical fraternity, new treatment methods bring with them substantially improved benefits to those affected by sleep apnea, which in this case are millions of people all around the world.

Initially sleep disorders can often seem to be quite inconsequential in themselves and thus are often ignored, though they can cause serious consequences as a result of such neglect, and that is why sleep apnea new treatments are not a matter of choice, but are a pressing necessity and only with such treatments can it become possible to overcome considerable discomforts and instead, live longer as well as stay healthier.

However, even in spite of the fact that Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the most accepted treatment method for treating sleep apnea, there are other sleep apnea new treatments being considered including another procedure known as UPPP or Uvulopalatopharngoplasty which is really a surgical means of removing excess tissues as well as palates from a patient’s air passage as well as throat.

In a similar vein, using LAUP or laser assisted uvuloplatoplasty also helps in doing the same thing as UPPP though in this case it is aided by use of lasers, which makes this sleep apnea new treatment very painless and also less time consuming as far as healing process goes.

The most revolutionary of all sleep apnea new treatments is the one that is known as Somnoplasty, which is a treatment method that is well suited for treating obstructive sleep apnea and it is able to provide relief in the long term as well.

With these and other sleep apnea new treatments, sleep apnea is not the dreaded condition it once was, though it should not lead one into feeling a false sense of complacency and so if you suspect this condition, have it treated at the earliest.

For person suffering from sleep apnea there are numerous treatment options including mechanical devices to keep their airway open, positional devices designed to keep their throat open as well as sleep apnea masks to help maintain a flow of air into their lungs. Although the continuous positive airway pressure masks are considered uncomfortable by many users, the sleep apnea masks are a less obtrusive method of helping sleep apnea sufferers than surgery.

Especially with obstructive sleep apnea, the sufferer will wake up possibly hundreds of times during the night, without knowing they were awake, in order to restore their breathing. They end up sleep the next day and often with a dry mouth and headache from the lack of oxygen in their blood. With sleep apnea masks, continuous pressure forces air past any obstructions in the throat, allowing them to get a good night’s sleep.

When sleep apnea masks, also called CPAP masks were first developed they were held onto a person’s face by straps that could come loose during the night and were often the cause of lack of sleep. not because they person could not breathe, but because they were downright uncomfortable. Newer designs of the sleep apnea masks allow them to be worn in relative comfort, held in place by different, often elastic straps that move with the person.

Less Restrictive Masks More Likely To Be Used

One of the biggest problems with some of the original sleep apnea masks was that people would not wear them. Regardless of the benefits available with the mask, if a person refused to use it ever night, the treatment was not going to be successful. In addition to the lack of comfort, many complained of waking up with an excessively dry mouth and throat from the air being forced through their mouth all night.

Some of the newer masks also supply moisturized air to prevent the mouth from drying out. There are sleep apnea masks available that cover only the mouth and others that also cover the nose, forcing pressurized air into the mouth and well as through the sinus cavity. When wearing sleep apnea masks if the person closes their mouth, they may not be able to breathe adequately through their nose, making the full-face mask more beneficial.

A person suffering from sleep apnea is also at risk for serious problems from a lack of oxygen getting into the blood and the organs. As uncomfortable as some people claim sleep apnea masks are, they are determined to be better than the alternative.

Sleep apnea is a serious medical disorder in which a person stops breathing for a period of time, usually for several seconds, but it can last for up to a minute. This may happen many times during the course of a night, and results in poor oxygen flow, which can negatively affect the heart. Although there is no certain cure for this condition, sleep apnea machines provide enormous health benefits and protection from more serious complications.

What Is It?

Actually there are several types of sleep apnea machines, and the severity of your condition will determine which one is right for you. The basic principle on which all of the sleep apnea machines operate is to allow the patient to have a continuous, uninterrupted flow of air in their breathing passages. The various types of machines accomplish this a little differently, but all give the patient much needed relief from a disorder that poses serious health risks.

The most common sleep apnea machine is known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This machine has a high success rate and is used in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Basically, it’s a nasal mask that is connected to the machine which blows a steady stream of air into the breathing passages, thereby keeping them open during sleep.

A second type of sleep apnea machine is Variable Positive Airway Pressure (VPAP). This device monitors the patient’s breathing and provides two types of pressures: one of inhalation and a lower one of exhalation. This is successful in patients that have additional respiratory conditions besides the sleep apnea. Understandably, this sleep apnea machine is more expensive than the CPAP because of the added level of pressure offered.

Automatic Positive Airway Pressure (APAP) is a third type of sleep apnea machine. This was recently approved by the FDA and uses sensors and computer technology to monitor the patient’s breathing. This device automatically adjusts the pressure on the airways as the patient’s breathing patterns shift, which effectively controls episodes of sleep apnea.

Which One Is Right for You?

The type and severity of your condition will determine which sleep machine is right for you. With increasing advances in technology, machines to help a person diagnosed with sleep apnea will only improve. All three of the devices mentioned incorporate sound principles and are relatively easy to use. If your doctor recommends one of these devices, you’ll quickly find that you’re getting a more restful sleep. Some patients even feel that a sleep apnea machine is like a guardian angel by their bedsides.

One of the main reasons why sleep apnea in F-16 pilots occurs is because of the extremes of G-forces that pulverize their bodies whenever they are up in the air, and as any pilot would tell you, having six or even seven G force pounding your body is not something to relish. What’s more, the F16 is a rough machine and it puts a lot of stress on the pilot’s body, and it has often been reported by F16 pilots that these G forces really hurt their backs.

Not Every Pilot Suffers From Sleep Apnea

The funny thing about sleep apnea in F-16 pilots is that it may only affect certain pilots, while others may not notice this condition at all, and often the cause behind this disorder is having a blockage in the throat which can prevent the F16 pilot from getting adequate and proper sleep at night, leading to cases of sleep apnea in F-16 pilots. The only possible solution for such types of problems will be to operate on the pilots in order to allow them to breathe freely again, especially when sleeping.

However, even this may not do the job perfectly and the problem may persist or show up again after a period of being able to breathe better. Furthermore, the trouble with undergoing an operation to treat sleep apnea in F-16 pilots is that it can cut short the career of the pilot and lead him to seek an alternative employment that won’t put him at so much risk. To underscore how serious the effects of those high G forces are on the body, most pilots report that the hurt caused to their backs is so severe that it leads them to want to give up flying altogether, because sleep apnea in F-16 pilots is serious enough to jeopardize some valuable real estate and also the lives of others.

The other thing that will give rise to a lot of concern when it concerns sleep apnea in F-16 pilots is that one thing can lead to another and before the pilot even knows it, he may find other problems developing such as numbing of the legs and even worse, paralysis of the feet. At this point of time, it becomes necessary for the F16 pilot to need to undergo an operation which may then provide temporary relief, because the back pain may still continue and even spread to the shoulder blades and also the neck, thereby causing worsening of the sleep apnea in F-16 pilots.

Sleep apnea is an incredibly common condition, but not many people are aware of just how common sleep apnea is in children as well. We all hear of adults suffering from the condition but never of children, and so it is no doubt then surprising to hear that millions of children around the world have sleep apnea as well.

What It Is

Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person experiences pauses in their breathing during sleep. Sufferers are usually not even aware that they stop breathing during sleep, and it is usually a partner or friend who notices it while they are sleeping and then notifies them of it.

There are actually two different types of sleep apnea that adults and children may experience, the more common being obstructive sleep apnea and the second being central sleep apnea.

Characteristic Symptoms

Sleep apnea in children is actually very common, and is characterized by repetitive episodes of upper airways getting blocked that occurs during sleep. It is usually also associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation.

There are a few symptoms that are often associated with this condition, including snoring, incredibly loud snorting, heavy irregular breathing, severe bedwetting, night terrors, confusion upon awakening, morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, developmental problems, and more.

The most difficult thing is the diagnosis of sleep apnea in children, because they are not aware of what they are experiencing and most times their parents are not as well. It therefore requires a lot of cancellations of other problems and conditions from the doctor before they can determine what the actual problem is.

Sleep apnea in children can be especially frightening because of this fact that the children have no idea what is happening to them. If you are a parent of a child suffering from sleep apnea, you really need to make sure that you are there for your children and that you support them and help them through this difficult time.

Sleep apnea in children may be scary but it can also be potentially life threatening in children. The risks of this condition in children include failure to grow, high blood pressure, and even heart problems. This is why it is so important that you make sure that you work closely with your child’s doctor so that they can keep an eye on your child’s improvement and make sure that the proper improvement is being made.

Since sleep apnea is a disorder that affects many millions of Americans, it is only natural that there should be many innovative ways of dealing with the problem, and so many companies are coming forward with innovative designs in order to help diagnose whether an individual is indeed suffering from sleep apnea. One such solution is known as Watch PAT 100 which is a product of Itamar Medical and which is non-invasive and FDA approved device that allows for sleep apnea home testing service and evaluation.

Wear It On The Wrist

All that it requires using this device is to wear it on the wrist and then its non-invasive finger mounted probe will measure the PAT or peripheral arterial tone, because it is this peripheral arterial tone that can accurately identify different events related to respiration that occur when a person is asleep, and besides these readings, the sleep apnea home testing service also records the saturation of oxygen, pulse rate as well as movement and wake/sleep states.

You can be sure that by using sleep apnea home testing service, you will get a very accurate picture of your sleep apnea problem, if of course, you have one, and that such sleep apnea home testing service actually is proven to correlate very accurately the sensitivity as well as specificity of polysomnographs.

It is only through the readings given by the sleep apnea home testing service that doctors can determine for sure whether a person is indeed a patient of sleep apnea and has breathing disorders that are also sleep related. However, the results of sleep apnea home testing service are not enough to provide the doctors with a means to determine the appropriate pressure settings for CPAP device.

In any case, sleep apnea home testing service is ideally suited for those who need a quick turnaround time as compared to going to a sleep lab, and who require complete diagnostic reporting that the doctor as well as the patient can study. In addition, a benefit of sleep apnea home testing service is that it has a much lower rate of failure as compared with many other means of testing, and the device itself is very user-friendly and it also has a simple design as well.

In addition, with sleep apnea home testing service, you won’t be interrupted too often, if at all, and you can test yourself in comfort as well as in total privacy, and you are also free to choose the time you will go to sleep and when to wake up.

According to Mayo Clinic research findings, individuals suffering from obstructive sleep apnea are at high risk for developing blood vessel impairment. The impairment in blood vessels may eventually cause a heightened blood pressure level and heart disease. The study was conducted in alliance with University of Iowa researchers. During the study, endothelial function of obese individuals was compared to a control group. The study significant shows a negative relationship between sleep apnea and high blood pressure.

The Study’s Findings

The endothelium (cells which line blood vessels) is damaged as a result of few health complications such as diabetes, high cholesterol, congestive heart failure, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. The study further suggested, reinforcing previous studies, that while this endothelial impairment is caused by high blood pressure and other related health complications, the impairment in endothelium can lead to blood pressure elevation as well.

The study further suggested that even the other factors like high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure may not be present; sleep apnea may independently cause endothelial damage. Hence, the study argued that sleep apnea may promote a long-term possibility for developing endothelium damage, high blood pressure and heart disease. So, sleep apnea and high blood pressure have an indirect, however causal relationship between them.

Conclusions

Obstructive sleep apnea and high blood pressure have strong correlation. In addition, the presence of untreated sleep apnea increases the risk of heart failure and death. While the relation between sleep apnea and high blood pressure is quite evident, the mechanism governing the association is still not clear.

The individuals with sleep apnea experience severe recurrent hypoxemic stress when they sleep. In addition to this stress, they also experience reflexive sympathetic activation and subsequently distinct increases in blood pressure leves. The occurrence of hypoxemic stress, reflexive sympathetic activation and an increased blood pressure level may lead to endothelial damage, while posing a possible threat for developing cardiovascular disease.

Possible Treatment Suggested

Since the study results confirmed that elimination of risk factors contribute to the restoration of endothelial function, the researchers concluded that the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea may possibly bring the same effect. The treatment of hypertension and high blood pressure improves the condition of endothelium. It may be possible to find out that treatment of the obstructive sleep apnea will be able to remove the nightly blood pressure spikes and oxygen deficiency that can cause more serious heart problems.

Sleep apnea refers to a critical, potentially life-threatening sleeping disorder that is far common than typically thought. Early diagnosis and understanding of sleep apnea is essential, since the health effects of sleep apnea can be severe. It may lead to the development of irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart failure and stroke. In this article, we will discuss the short term and long term health effects of sleep apnea.

Short Term Effects

Sleep apnea can be associated with choking sensations. The recurrent disruptions of deep, recuperative sleep often cause short term health effects of sleep apnea like early morning headaches and an extreme daytime drowsiness. The involuntary and functional complications in the airways may lead to disruptions, known as apneic events, in breathing pattern at the time of sleeping.

For some individuals, apnea occurs as a result of partial blocking of the airway when the throat muscles and tongue loosen up during sleep. Sleep apnea may also occur in obese individuals when their fat presses their airway muscles together. Since the individual tries his best to breathe, it makes the sound of snoring, which is one of the most common short term health effects of sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can occur to any one, irrespective of age, gender, race or cultural differences. Most commonly, few short term health effects of sleep apnea are observed among people with sleep apnea. These may include loud snoring, being overweight, and high blood pressure, structural abnormality in nose, mouth or throat.

Long Term Effects

Since individuals with sleep apnea experience an extreme disturbance in their sleep at night, they feel excessively sleepy throughout the day. The inadequate sleep causes the poor sufferer increasing stress levels, emotional disturbances, mood disorders and many more problems.

The long term health effects of sleep apnea may not be limited to these annoyances; rather it could be disabling and eventually fatal. These long term effects range from depression, irritability, sexual dysfunction, learning and memory impairment, feeling drowsy all the time, it may lead to even more serious health issues like heart attack or high blood pressure.

Although, scientists have not yet confirmed the validity and reliability concerning the causal relationship between sleep apnea and high blood pressure, research findings suggest there is a strong correlation between these two. They also affirmed that the risk for heart attack and stroke are also heightened if sleep apnea is left untreated. This condition does not get better on its own. You must see a doctor and get treated.

Sleep apnea is a very common condition, one which occurs when enough air cannot move into your lungs while you are sleeping. As a result, sufferers of this condition experience pauses in breath as they are sleeping, whether they notice it or not. There are a few reasons why one may develop sleep apnea.

One of the most common reasons is because the throat muscles and tongue relax more than they should. It could also be that your tonsils and adenoids are larger than normal or you are overweight or are an alcoholic. It is important to go to a doctor for a proper diagnosis so you can get this serious condition treated.

Treatment

There are many options when it comes to the treatment of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea headgear is often used. All sleep apnea headgear works by opening up the airways of the sleeper, thereby helping him or her to breathe properly while they are sleeping and eliminate or at least relieve the sleep apnea condition.

There are a few sleep apnea headgear products in particular that are popular, one being the FlexiFit Series HC405 Nasal Mask with Headgear. This sleep apnea headgear is great because it provides a breakthrough in comfort and flexibility by using an innovative mask design. It is also very affordable, so you do not have to worry about spending a fortune just to get the treatment that you require for your condition.

The Aclaim 2 CPAP Mask with Headgear is another great sleep apnea headgear device. It features a unique nasal cushion and silicone seal and is designed to fit different nose shapes. As a result this headgear provides greater comfort and reduces unwanted leaks. There are a few improvements on this device compared to previous models, including locking t-pieces, enhanced forehead pads, improved silicone seal, stronger clear glider, and even extra diffuser filters.

You will want to discuss all of the options for sleep apnea with your doctor before going ahead with any sleep apnea headgear or any other treatment. You need to be aware of what your options are so you can make the most informed and knowledgeable decision.

Sleep apnea can definitely be frightening and potentially dangerous by interfering with your circulation system. You will also get a lousy night’s sleep. Sleep apnea affects millions of people around the world. By working together with your doctor you will be able to relieve your condition as much as possible.
